Unions Seek Dialogue With Golden Hope Plantations
KUALA
LUMPUR, Jan 19 (Bernama) -- A broad-based community coalition of labour,
environmental and other organisations, is keen to meet with directors
of Golden Hope Plantations Bhd to discuss their concerns over pollution
and safety problems at their plant in Cincinnati.
This is in view that as the result of a 50:50 joint venture between
Golden Hope and Cognis Deutschland GmbH, the oleo-chemical portion of
a plant in Cincinnati is being operated from Golden Hope's headquarters
in Kuala Lumpur.
In a statement issued from Cincinnati on Wednesday, the group said that
it has extended in a letter an invitation to meet with members of Golden
Hope board of directors.
The group, comprising United Steelworkers (USW), Environmental Community
Organisation (ECO), Ohio Citizen Action (OCA), Cincinnati AFL-CIO Labor
Council, Sierra Club, Ohio Chapter and other groups seek to discuss
with Golden Hope a number of issues surrounding a year-long labour dispute
between about 250 members of USW Local 14340 and Cognis at the Cincinnati
